As I was reading Proverbs chapter 11 verse 31, I learned something interesting. This verse is linked to I Peter 4:18 in The Septuagint (Greek version of the Old Testament).
Proverbs 11:31 kjv
31 “Behold, The righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner. (Greek version says “if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and wicked?) Joyce Meyers Bible.
I Peter 4:18 kjv
18 “And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?”
First, I want to bring up a point that persuades me to love the Bible even more. The Apostles and the early Jewish Christians knew their Torah. Of course Jesus still had to open their eyes to the scriptures that spoke of his coming. Even the great Paul needed to have his eyes opened to the old testament scriptures that said Jesus was the messiah. But often the Apostles when pleading with the crowds of Jews and gentiles alike, knew their Torah well enough to link old testament scriptures into the current days events and prophecies.
A new world had begun! The Jewish messiah had come!
Hebrews Chapter 6 Paul talks to his peeps about staying committed to the way. Some argue that you can lose your salvation from this chapter, but we won’t go into that now. I wanted to bring this chapter up because as we read Proverbs 11:31 and I Peter 4:18, we need to stand close to God and have him rule our lives so that we can be a light to the world. Again, these scriptures (Proverbs 11:31 and I Peter 4:18) make me desire to be right with him because if the righteous scarcely be saved, then what of the sinner. And the sinner may be our family, neighbors and friends. Things to think about sincerely. Proberbs 9:10 kjv The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and I think having a healthy fear of the Lord is necessary. It is necessary because this world would have you not fear the Lord and then we could not be a light to them.
I’ll leave you with this scripture: Proverbs 11:30
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”
*I was unable to link the Bible Gateway.com to the verses. I will try to in the future. Thank you.
